Welcome to Atelier del Libro. It is a pleasure to share with you the process of creating our unique and handmade pieces, which guarantee a high-quality process that combines luxury materials with handmade work.
Our handmade process starts with the selection and folding of the sheets, followed by the sewing of the sections, the assembly of the book block, the selection and design of the skins, the creation of the cover shape and its details using the Krause machine, and finally the pressing and resting process. In our Atelier del Libro, traditional binding processes are transferred between artisans, and the most luxurious materials are crafted with care and attention every day.
Luxury materials such as Fedrigoni paper, papyrus, marbled paper flyleaf, special inks, gold leaf, hemp threads, caprine skins, German velvets, ornamental decorative materials, noble and lacquered woods are used in our process.
Noble and lacquered woods are roots of different species that stand out for their uniformity, hardness, and beautiful veins. This allows the wood to be perfectly carved to create the outer case that protects and preserves the facsimile in optimal conditions. Some of our works are preserved in lacquered woods, using the same working process as used for pianoforte.
Ornamental decorative materials are pieces designed by artisans based on studies of the origin of the cover. These pieces are handmade, such as individually engraved figures or pieces that are plated with golden foils.
Golden leaves is a material used for reproducing the same illuminations of the original book in the same way.
Fedrigoni paper is made from pure ECF cellulose that is environmentally friendly and FSC® certified, with a cloud effect finish that recreates an antique parchment look, specifically made for creating facsimiles for our clients.
Papyrus is a material that comes from Egypt and is collected once a year. It has never been used for this kind of printing before and requires a particular 3D printing technique that creates a unique effect on the final product.
Hemp thread is highly resistant and can only made by craftsmen ,making it a long-lasting material for sewing books.
Caprine leather are a great option for obtaining precision and quality due to their thinness and resistance. They are highly flexible, long-lasting, and enhance the beauty of the facsimile, respecting its original structure.
German and Italian velvet are luxury materials created to recreate the original book cover. Made from silk, they have a sublime quality and elegance, which is the result of the German and Italian velvet tradition.
Marbled paper is a material created by manually dyeing algae on paper, creating marbled shapes. That process converts it in a decorative, geometric, and unique form, using the same technique that was used in the Middle Ages.
