SPECULUM HUMANAE SALVATIONIS
Summary:
Fedrigoni Pergamenata Stucco
National Library of Spain
Lacquered walnut root wooden box
Description:
A true “bestseller” from the Middle Ages. A work whose images taught the content of the Bible to an audience with no access to the passages of the Old and New Testaments. A collection of images for human salvation. Every page is decorated with miniatures from the German school, with a certain Italian influence, covering the top of each sheet. Of all the surviving handwritten copies of the Speculum, this one stands out for its rich description of the characters, clothes, weapons, armour, furniture and detailed accessories enriched in 22k gold.
